This article explains the various battle mechanics in Axie Infinity: Classic. Mastering these mechanics is the key to victory.
With a plethora of innovative mechanics, the game empowers players to skillfully alter the course of each match by utilizing these mechanics to their max potential.
Class Bonuses
An axie's class determines what type of damage bonus it gets. There's two types of damage bonuses that an axie can get.
Class Strengths/Weaknesses
The axie classes are subdivided into three groups. This creates a rock-paper-scissors system where one group of classes are stronger against another group, but are also simultaneously weaker against another. This adds a layer of complexity when creating strategies in Axie Classic.
When an axie attacks a class it is strong against, the card deals 15% additional damage. Conversely, when it attacks an axie it is weak against, it deals 15% less damage.
Same-Class Stat Bonus
If an axie uses a card with the same class as its body, they get a 10% extra bonus to the stats of that card. For example, a Plant Axie playing a plant card will receive 10% extra attack/shield.
NOTE: These damage bonuses stack, so you can gain additional damage by utilizing both these mechanics [Card attack*115%*110%].
Additional Skill damage
Skill adds damage when an axie plays a combo [playing multiple cards in one turn]. The extra damage is calculated like this:
(Card Attack * Class Strength/Weakness Bonus * Skill )/ 500
Turn Order
In Classic, players choose the cards they would like to play simultaneously in each round. Axies from both sides then attack/activate their cards in a specific order based on their speed.
In cases where two or more axies have the same Speed stat, the turn order is determined using the following hierarchy.
Higher Speed > Lower HP > Higher Skill > Higher Morale > Lower Axie ID
There are also card effects that alter an axie's Speed, you can utilize these effects to alter your axies' or your opponent's axies' turn order.
Energy and Card Draw
Each player starts with 3 Energy at the start of a match, and will get 2 additional Energy at the start of every round. Each player also draws 6 cards at the start of the match, and get to draw 3 more cards at the start of every round.
Players gets to keep their remaining Energy and cards on each round into the next round. Utilizing your Energy and cards efficiently is key to winning the match.
To play a card, you need to spend a specific amount of Energy. This is indicated on the top-left corner of the card.
There are also cards that manipulates the Energy count and card draw for either player. You can utilize these mechanics to play more cards, or hinder your opponent by taking away their Energy.
Positioning and Targeting Priority
Your axies' placement in the battlefield plays a key role in your strategy. If you play cards without any target-altering mechanics, the targeting priority is as follows:
Closest Opponent > Opponent in the Same Lane
NOTE: If an axie is in the middle lane and there are two opposing axies in both the top and bottom lane, the axie will always target the top first.
You can also utilize target-altering mechanics to target a specific axie that's normally not going to be targeted first based on targeting priority.
Battle Mechanics
There are various buffs/debuffs that can be applied to your axies through the effects of cards. These have varying effects, such as altering your card's damage, changing the target priority, and disabling some mechanics.
Critical Strike
Critical Strike is a random mechanic where an attack deals double damage. It has a low base chance of happening, and the more Morale your axie has, the higher the chance it has to land a critical strike. This mechanic adds thrill to the matches as it opens up the possibility of a comeback, encouraging players to play the match until the very end.
Athough the critical strike mechanic is random, there are effects that alters the chance or guarantees critical strikes.
Last Stand
When an axie is about to be knocked out, it has a chance to enter a state called Last Stand. In this state, the axie gets a few more turns before it is completely knocked out. The more morale an axie has, the greater the chance of it get to the Last Stand state and the more turns it gets in Last Stand.
Playing a card consumes one turn count of Last Stand, while getting attacked consumes two counts.
There are also effects that alters an axie's chance to enter Last Stand, which you can utilize to your advantage.
